Dog Protection Act

Senate Bill 13-226, “The Dog Protection Act,” was signed into law by Gov. John Hickenlooper at a special ceremony at the Denver Animal Shelter.

The bill’s bipartisan sponsors were Sen. David Balmer (R), Sen. Lucia Guzman (D), Rep. Lois Court (D) and Rep. Don Coram (R).

The new law will help prevent incidents where family dogs are mistakenly shot by police. It respects our dedicated police officers by providing for training programs that will better equip them to deal with dog encounters.

To help ensure passage of S.B. 13-226, Colorado Voters for Animals attended hearings, submitted testimony, made phone calls, sent emails and assisted with a rally on the Capitol steps. We asked our supporters to contact their legislators and come to the rally, and the response was amazing. Together, we made a real difference on this bill, which will benefit family pets across our state.

The new law calls for a task force to develop the training programs. The task force is comprised of animal care and control, animal behavior, and law enforcement professionals from across the state. The task force held its initial meeting Aug. 28. Co-chairing the effort are Dr. Randa MacMillan, DVM, and Montezuma County Sheriff Dennis Spruell.

Colorado Voters for Animals is pleased to be providing administrative support to the task force.
